A New You?

Alcoholics Anonymous is a peer recovery program for alcoholics. Almost alcoholic readers may or may not choose to attend open AA meetings and listen to the stories of addiction and recovery that are shared there. One thing that has struck us from speaking with many people and hearing their stories is just how dramatically their lives have improved after they stopped drinking. Whether an alcoholic or an almost alcoholic, becoming open to insights—or epiphanies—seems to be possible only when we have a clear head; Jeff’s experience in the previous example demonstrated this.

Many almost alcoholics are not aware that they drink to smother feelings or avoid thinking about certain things. When they decide to stop drinking, even for a short period of time, they often experience emotions or reflect on questions that they’ve long avoided. This can be uncomfortable for a time—after all, it was those uncomfortable feelings that they were medicating with alcohol. But, as it did for Jeff, this can mark the starting point for a more fulfilling life.

Don’t be surprised if changing your drinking behavior also marks the beginning of a deeper process of change—in fact, expect it. That’s not to say you will turn your life upside down. On the other hand, such a change can lead to a new you in unique and significant ways. For Jeff, change was not necessarily dramatic. He did not quit his job or leave his family so he could write the “great American novel.” Yet the changes he made were significant for him and led him to become a healthier man—physically, emotionally, and mentally.
